02.27 - Thesis, Main Ideas, Outlines

At the beginning of class today, everyone had 20 minutes to work on their summary notecards for the background section of their public figure project. After 20 minutes, we came back together as a class and I reviewed how to write a thesis and main ideas and then how to use these in creating an outline. Notes from this discussion are below as is a video reviewing how to create an outline in NoodleTools.

02.25 - Set 10 Roots and Prefixes quiz / Paraphrase and Quotation

At the beginning of class today, we reviewed set 10 roots and prefixes with the game "Zoo" that was taught to us by a student in the class. The roots, prefixes, and words addressed through this activity are available below.

After the quiz, we corrected responses as a class. The quizzes were then turned in and will be added to the gradebook this weekend.

Next, we reviewed how to paraphrase and quote sources in our research and looked at how to make notecards in NoodleTools (see notes below). We also looked at reworking our due date schedule for research given where we are at with our work this week and the re-scheduling of winter carnival from the Friday before break to this Friday.

We will look at how to adjust dates after 3/5 later according to what pacing is best for the class.

Tomorrow, everyone will have the class period to work with this material.

Homework:

Identify passages in your research sources that you would like to paraphrase or quote. We will incorporate this information on notecards tomorrow.

Revise or complete any assignments as necessary.

02.24 - Grade Reports / Paraphrase and Quotation

At the beginning of class today, we had a quick check in around what people did for break. Everyone had four minutes to chat with a partner. We then went around and each group shared out one of the things they had learned about their partners vacation (the instruction slide from class is below).

I handed out grade report sheets for the assignments completed so far for quarter 3 and returned work that was handed in just before vacation.

We then reviewed the work we will be doing for the Public Figure Project using an informational sheet that I handed out in class. This lead us into a review of summary and then discussion about what good use of paraphrase and quotation involves. In the last five minutes of class, people used the informational sheets from class to write a found poem describing how to quote or paraphrase correctly (depending on which sheet they were using).

Handouts:
Quotation Information (from the LHS Research Guide)
Paraphrase Information (from the LHS Research Guide)

Homework:

Prepare for the set 10 roots and prefixes quiz (rescheduled from Thursday 2/13).

If you did not yet complete your notecards with three sentences that summarize each source, do so for homework.

Revise or complete any assignments as necessary.

Alternate roots/prefix activity (completed in individuals' writer's journals)

After 20 minutes, we reviewed the answers to the practice sheet and people shared out their roots/prefixes stories.

We will have the set 10 roots and prefixes quiz tomorrow.

We then returned to working with sources and note cards summaries of sources for the public figure project. I handed out a section overview to help people better understand the development of our research. For today, people should be particularly focused on the first section and making sure that the sources they find help them answer the questions associated with that section.

Everyone had the rest of the period to work with their sources, bibliography, and notecards.

02.10 - Revision & Creating Projects on NoodleTools

In the first part of class today,  I handed out the practice sheets for set 10 roots and prefixes. Everyone worked with these sheets and I also handed out grade report sheets for the third quarter and returned assessed work. Everyone had this time to work on their roots and prefixes and/or work on any revisions indicated on the returned work.

In the second part of class, I showed everyone how to sign up for NoodleTools. We reviewed how to do a bibliography on NoodleTools and then everyone had time to get on a computer and create their project on NoodleTools. For a review on how to create a project and enter sources into the bibliography, see the video below.

When signing up for NoodleTools, check the options shown below and then enter your name (last name goes first) with a dash and then the name of the person you will be researching (see my example with Nikola Tesla).

02.06 - Big Rooty / Using Marvel and Google

At the beginning of class today, we reviewed the set 09 roots and prefixes with a new language game called "Big Rooty". I taught everyone the game and then we brought in the roots and prefix element as a way of reviewing for the quiz (rules and notes from class below). We then had the set 09 quiz which we corrected together in class.

Next, I reviewed how to access the online Student Research Center through Marvel database and looked at how to use Google and Google Scholar to find sources related to everyone's public figures. A review video of how to use these searches is available below. The video was made for a class doing another topic, but all of the advice and information regarding how to use the search engines is solid for any project and general interest.

Homework:

Identify three strong (reliable with plenty of information) for your public figure.

Complete missing work and revise any assignment that scored below a 3.

02.04 - Public Figure Project: Background Information

For class today, we began work on our public figure project. At the beginning of class I checked in with individuals on what person they had decided to research. I then reviewed the overall structure of the paper and what the research process will look like. In sum, the paper will consist of four sections and we will use the same research pattern to gather, outline, and write about information learned through research (see slides below).

Everyone had the rest of the period to begin researching their public figure. For today, no one need to decide on what sources they were using. The idea was to begin gathering and finding information and then later we will look at how to determine which information is good and valuable.

Homework:

Continue researching your chosen public figure. We will look at how to determine which information is useful and credible next class.

Prepare for the set 09 roots and prefixes quiz on Thursday.

02.03 - Roots and Prefixes Set 09 / Revisions

At the beginning of class today, I handed out set 09 roots and prefixes sheets and returned set 08 revisions. Everyone had the first half of class to work on their set 08 revisions and complete the word list sheet for set 09. If anyone had extra time their focus should have been on coming up with multiple examples for the different roots/prefixes.

Roots and Prefixes Set 09 - Word List
Roots and Prefixes Set 09 - Practice

In the second half of class, I reviewed overall performance on the found poems we did last week for Bob Seeger and Janet Yellen. In this review, I also focused on how to achieve a 4 on this sort of assignment. Everyone had the remaining time in the period to complete or revise their Seeger and Yellen found poems.

01.31 - Roots and Prefixes Quiz / Week Review

At the beginning of class today, everyone had a few minutes to review this week's roots and prefixes.
