03.31 - Public Figure Project Models

We started class today with the set 13 roots and prefixes. Everyone had the first fifteen minutes of class to complete the word list sheet associated with this set. We will work with the practice sheet later this week.

Before everyone began, we reviewed how to use the dictionary to find words that use the roots and prefixes, how to verify their etymology (by looking at what the dictionary lists as their root word and by looking at the definition).

Next, I presented the class with two long form journalism articles on athletes in marginalized sports (figure skating and juggling). We're looking at these articles as models for the public figure project that have the same shape and purpose as our project, but have been done by professional journalists. We focused our work by looking at the way in which Jason Fagone begins his article on the juggler Anthony Gatto:

I feel like I should let you know what you’re in for. This is a long story about a juggler. It gets into some areas that matter in all sports, such as performance and audience and ambition, but there’s absolutely a lot of juggling in the next 6,700 words. I assume you may bail at this point, which is fine; I almost bailed a few times in the writing. The usual strategies of sportswriting depend on the writer and reader sharing a set of passions and references that make it easy to speed along on rivers of stats and myth, but you almost certainly don’t know as much about juggling as you do about football or baseball. We’re probably staring at a frozen lake here.

Both of these articles about sports with a more limited dedicated audience and yet the articles are meant to be read by a much wider audience. The story here is not just for fans of the sport (figure skating or juggling). The story attempts to present these figures and get at a deeper sort of truth which is applicable to a wider audience. The authors are moving beyond the "what" information to explain the "so what" about these performers so that we may appreciate the "now what" of a wider message about who and what they represent through their sport.

Everyone was able to choose whichever article they wanted to read (lengths and difficulty are approximately the same). Everyone was also asked to take a copy of the questions associated with their article.

03.26 - Research: Section 2

At the beginning of class today, we looked at what section three of the public figure project research should be. Key points of this discussion include:

This section of the paper focuses on why this public figure is significant to you.

In this section, discuss some of the life events that were previously addressed in the paper and describe how they are meaningful to you.

You may choose to do some additional research about your public figure in areas that are of interest to you and that did not come up in this section of the paper originally.

In your outline, you may (and will probably need to) incorporate notecards that were also used in other sections of your paper so that you can address those facts or events and discuss what they mean for you (previously you discussed what they said about your public figure).

After this review, we checked in quickly on everyone's progress via a show of hands (see directions below).

In terms of progress, most of the class was around stage 3 or 4 in terms of their progress. We will be using this week to get people caught up on their projects and then working on section 3 next week.

03.25 - Research

At the beginning of class today, I handed out roots and prefix sheets for the set 12 roots and prefixes.
Everyone had about 15 minutes to complete the front side of this sheet. We reviewed how to use the dictionary to complete these sheets before we began.

After this time, we returned to work with our research projects. At this point, everyone should be working on writing the second section of their research paper. A number of people have not reached this stage yet, however so we checked in quickly on everyone's progress via a show of hands (see directions below).

03.18 - Public Figure Project Section 2 Notecards

We started class today with the unit 2 roots and prefixes quiz. We spent some time going over how to respond to the questions since this quiz used a different format than previous quizzes. After everyone had an opportunity to take the quiz, we corrected quizzes together and discussed the correct answers.

Next, we reviewed the section 2 requirements for our public figure project (see below) and then everyone had the remaining time to continue working on their notecards for this section of the paper. Notecards should be finished before or during class tomorrow so that the outline can be completed for class on Thursday. This will enable everyone to begin writing the initial draft of their paper on Thursday. Section 2 drafts should be submitted for grading via Google Drive by 2 p.m. on Friday.

How did that person attain or hone these skills/knowledge?
What made this person’s use of these skills different or special compared to others?
What are some significant projects/moments from this person’s career?
How do these projects/moments reflect on this person’s overall development?
If the person is still alive: How does early work relate to where they are now in life?
If the person is not alive: How does early work compare to later work in their career?

03.06 - Initial Draft

We began class today with everyone working on the practice sheet for the set 11 roots and prefixes. We reviewed responses to this sheet and then took a look at identifying what the three whats that we reviewed yesterday look like in the introduction to an actual essay. The essay we looked at in class and our notes on it are below.

In our discussion of this introduction we were able to clearly identify the "what?".

The "so what?" portion of the essay was also present. Some awkward phrasing meant the writing was not as clear as it could have been and made the "so what?" harder to find even though it was present.

We did not feel that there was a real "now what?" element that set us up as readers to transition to the next idea. I wrote in a possible "now what?" portion to show what this could look like.

Everyone then had the rest of the period to work on writing the background section of their essay.
I met individually with students to answer questions about the writing process and to proof sections of students' papers.

03.05 - Outline to Initial Draft (cont'd)

At the beginning of class today, we reviewed the "three whats" from our discussion yesterday.
In this review, I added to yesterday's discussion in that I presented the questions as inner voices that people should listen and respond to while writing. Some people are motivated by an inner voice that challenges them and some people are motivated by an inner voice that is always eager to hear more about what they have to say. This is reflected in the slides below.

Also, make sure you ever only use the challenging voice as motivation.
The challenging voice shouldn't tear you down, it should just poke you into action.
If the challenging voice gets to feeling bothersome, switch to the interested voice.

The interested voice is a great one.
When responding to it, use as much detail as possible.

Switching between the voices can be helpful.
Sometimes, people motivate themselves with a voice that challenges them and spurs them into action. Then, they continue on with the interested voice that supports and listens to the argument.

Everyone had the rest of the period to work on developing their initial draft of the first part of this paper. I was on hand to work individually with people during this process.

Writing advice for the day: Remember that this isn't a biography of the person you are researching. You're learning about them and then identifying what is important or meaningful about their experience that people should learn from. While writing, ask yourself, "What do we have to learn from this person's success?" and write about the answer to that question.

03.04 - Research: Outline to Initial Draft

We started today's class with a discussion on how to take the information found in doing research (now organized into an outline with a thesis and main ideas/topics) and turn it into an initial draft of a poem. To explain this, I introduced the idea of "the three whats."

In class I explained that these three types of what (what? so what? now what?) are some questions that can kind of work like a fractal where the pattern is repeated in the structure of the whole essay and individual body paragraphs. The essay and body paragraphs can be effectively structured by answering the questions each time in order.
